Interesting facts about Storhogna

Storhogna is located in the municipality of Berg in the county of Jämtland. Elk dominated this area as early as 6,000 - 7,000 years ago when the first humans, hunters and collectors, arrived here. Hunters followed the migration routes of their prey and left 20,000 known archaeological finds and 10,000 trap pits. Even today, the elk plays an important role for residents and is the proud symbol of Jämtland.

Jämtland became Norwegian in 12th century and after Norway was united with Denmark in 1536, the region became Danish. The county came under Swedish rule again in 1645 after several wars and was finally placed officially under the Swedish crown 37 years later after numerous attempts by Denmark to regain the area.

Charles XI (King of Sweden 1660-1697) wandered through Jämtland on his way home from Norway. After a long hike, the party stopped at a mountain peak and were completely breathtaken by the beautiful valley with its springs suddenly opening up beneath them. Streams flowed down from the mountain top, there was greenery as far as the eye could see and flowers were growing everywhere. "There should be an inn here!" cried Charles XI enthusiastically and allowed his men to stay there overnight.

This beautiful valley and surrounding mountains was Storhogna and 300 years later, in 1965, a small café was built at the foot of the mountain. The building was extended to become the Charles XI Inn, which was its name until it changed owners in 1999 and became the Storhogna Mountain Lodge & Spa. There is now a hiking trail named after Charles XI in memory of his long trek. The Charles XI hiking trail runs through Storhogna, passes close to the hotel and offers a very popular hike. The mountain lodge is the gem in Storhogna's crown and in 2006, the hotel and its spa were given 21 points of a possible 25 by a team from the Swedish Dagens Industri newspaper. We are now creating holiday accommodation for you and your family in this wonderful environment with both mountains and cultural history just around the corner.
